Why Choose Us to Ship Your Heavy Cargo from China

What Is Oversized and Heavy Cargo? What Is Oversized and Heavy Cargo

Some cargo may exceed standard transport limits due to its size, weight, or irregular shape. And these kinds of cargo are called oversized and heavy cargo. Common types include large industrial equipment, mechanical installations, steel structures, project components, and other cargo that cannot be shipped by standard transportation methods.

Oversized cargo is the goods that exceed the standard width or length limits of containers or vehicles. Heavy cargo is goods with a single-piece weight that exceeds the normal transportation capacity.

Shipping heavy freight places high demands on logistics services. And DFH Logistics is experienced in heavy freight globally. If you are unsure whether your cargo is oversized or overweight, you can contact us for free consultations. Based on your cargo and requirements, we can also provide tailored and ideal transportation plans.

What Are Weight and Size Limits for Heavy Freight?

Sea Freight

Standard containers can hold 28-30 tons/container. Reinforced containers can hold relatively heavier weights. Flat-rack, open-top containers can hold oversized and heavy cargo. For extremely heavy cargo, breakbulk shipping supports 50-100 tons/container or even heavier.

The inner sizes of standard containers are about 5.9 m (20GP) or 12 m (40HQ) in length, 2.35 m in width, and 2.39 m in height. For oversized cargo, we support the transportation of extra-long, wide, and high transport vehicles.

Truck Freight

Standard trucks can hold 20-25 tons. Reinforced trucks or container trailers can hold up to 30 tons. For heavy-haul trailers, capacity ranges from 50 to 100 tons, and even higher for heavier loads.

The length limit of standard trucks is about 12-13.6 m, the width is 2.4-2.6 m, and the height is 2.6-3 m. We also provide special trucks for oversized cargo, capable of transporting extra-long equipment.

Railway Freight

The standard payload is about 27 tons/container. For reinforced containers, the payload can rise to nearly 30 tons/container.

The size limits of containers are similar to sea freight containers, with a length of about 5.9 m or 12 m, a width of about 2.35 m, and a height of about 2.39 m. For oversized cargo, special plans are also available, like flat-rack containers.

Air Freight

The weight load of passenger planes is up to 500 kg per piece. Full cargo aircraft can carry heavier shipments ranging from 1 to 20 tons, depending on the aircraft type.

The size of the cargo is limited by aircraft door size and ULD (Unit Load Device) constraints. Individual cargo should comply with the ULD standard size. The length is typically 3–6 m. On special occasions, longer items are acceptable. Some oversized cargo needs special aircraft or loading arrangements.

Based on the size and weight of your cargo, you can decide on the types of carriers and transportation devices. If you are unsure of shipping modes, DFH Logistics can help. We can arrange the most suitable carrier for you, preventing cargo damage or rejection due to improper transport space.

Cost Considerations in Heavy Freight ShippingCost Considerations in Heavy Freight Shipping

In heavy freight shipping, transportation costs consist of different parts. As heavy cargo requires complicated handling operations, the cost structure is more detailed and depends more on the choice of shipping plans.

Origins and Destinations

The distance between origins and destinations affects transportation fees. Commonly, the farther the shipping distance, the higher the transportation cost. The route flexibility also affects costs. Factors like multimodal transport and restricted transport areas will cost you more.

Though the distance is relatively fixed, DFH Logistics can arrange the most suitable and cost-effective shipping routes for heavy freight. Thus, you can ship your heavy cargo to destinations successfully at a competitive price.

Shipping Mode

The choice of shipping modes is the core element affecting transportation costs. Though air freight is ideal for urgent orders, it is quite demanding on your budget. Railway freight reaches a balance between cost and delivery time. Sea freight is the most cost-effective, but it takes longer for deliveries.

You may be unsure about what shipping mode to choose, and DFH Logistics can offer you professional advice. With our logistics plan for heavy freight, we ensure that every dollar you spend is necessary and well-justified.

Handling and Lifting Cost

Commonly, the handling and lifting of heavy cargo requires professional equipment support. Thus, operation costs are needed, including costs for forklifts, cranes, specialised vehicles, and handling charges at ports or warehouses.

When providing quotations, DFH Logistics will clearly explain the additional fees and inform you of possible surcharges during heavy cargo shipments. We also offer some favours, including 15 days of free warehousing, thus reducing shipping fees for heavy cargo shipments.

Repacking and Reinforcement

To ensure the safety of your heavy cargo, some products need repacking and reinforcement. Options such as wooden packaging, steel frame fixation, anti-vibration measures, binding reinforcement, and others can better protect your goods during shipment.

DFH Logistics offers multiple choices for cargo reinforcement. Professional repacking services increase the reliability of your bulk cargo and reduce the risk of damage in transportation. You can count on us for a safe delivery.

Customs Clearance

For heavy cargo cross-border transportation, customs clearance fees are necessary. Document preparation, import and export declarations, tax handling, and related procedures require processing costs. The more complex the procedure, the higher the processing cost of customs clearance.

Besides the transportation costs, customs clearance is also related to shipping efficiency. If you lack documents or are unfamiliar with the procedures, customs clearance will take longer, resulting in cargo delays. And customs procedures are more complex for large and heavy cargo.

DFH Logistics is your professional freight forwarder for heavy cargo. We offer not only transparent pricing but also reliable customs clearance services. Together with DFH Logistics, you can avoid unnecessary worries about customs and reduce risks of heavy cargo delays.

Cargo Insurance

Heavy, large cargo is often high-value. It will commonly undergo complex shipping procedures. If your goods are damaged, lost, or suffer from other unpredictable risks, cargo insurance can offer compensation and reduce your losses. To better protect your cargo, cargo insurance is highly recommended.

Insurance premiums are usually calculated based on the declared value of cargo, and DFH Logistics offers you cargo insurance with reasonable premiums and high compensation coverage. Whenever and wherever accidents happen, we protect your interests and minimise your losses.

Additional Charges

In realistic shipments, additional fees may occur, including port congestion fees, fuel surcharges, storage fees, overweight or oversized surcharges, fees for special routes or urgent transportation, and others. These costs are related to the market environment and transportation conditions.

If you are unsure about possible additional charges, DFH Logistics is at your service. We can analyse the current situation of your cargo and shipping market and offer you the most cost-effective shipping plans. Transportation for heavy cargo will also be cost-friendly.
