What Types of Goods Can Be Shipped by DDP from China to Canada?
DDP shipping can be used for many types of goods imported from China to Canada, provided the products meet applicable Canadian import and transportation requirements. Common examples include:
- Furniture and home furnishings
- Machinery and equipment
- Consumer products
- Electronics and general merchandise
- Retail and wholesale inventory
- E-commerce inventory
- Commercial supplies
- Amazon FBA
The suitability of DDP depends on the product type, packaging, dimensions, value, and applicable import regulations.
Who Handles Customs Clearance under DDP Shipping to Canada?
Under a DDP shipping, the customs clearance process is coordinated as part of the seller’s logistics responsibility, rather than leaving the buyer to manage the entire import process. But in most cases, the freight forwarder will handle the customs clearance on behalf of the seller or buyer.
Before shipment, it’s important for importers to clarify these responsibilities, as it may lead to non-transparent costs.

What Should I Know about DDP Shipping from China to Canada?
Before choosing DDP, importers should look beyond the freight rate and confirm what is actually included in the service. You should check the total shipping scope.
A DDP quotation should clearly define whether it includes:
- Supplier pickup
- Export handling
- International freight
- Customs clearance
- Duties and taxes
- Destination handling
- Final delivery
What Is the Difference between DDP and DAP?
With DDP, the seller takes responsibility for import clearance and applicable duties and taxes under the agreed terms. With DAP, the seller delivers the goods to the agreed destination, but the buyer generally handles import clearance, duties, and taxes. Following is a comparison of DDP and DAP.
| Item | DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) | DAP (Delivered at Place) |
| Cargo Pickup | Seller | Seller |
| International Freight | Seller | Seller |
| Export Customs Clearance | Seller | Seller |
| Import Customs Clearance | Seller / DDP arrangement | Buyer |
| Import Duties & Taxes | Seller | Buyer |
| Customs Documentation | Seller / appointed customs broker | Buyer / appointed customs broker |
| Final-Mile Delivery | Seller | Seller, subject to agreed destination |
Are Duties and Taxes Included in DDP Shipping to Canada?
Yes. Normally, duties and taxes are included in DDP shipping. However, businesses should not assume that every charge is automatically included simply because the shipment is described as “DDP.” Before booking, confirm:
- Import duties
- GST/HST or other applicable taxes
- Customs clearance
- Destination handling
- Final delivery
- Any special cargo or delivery charges
The actual duty and tax amount depends on factors such as the product classification, customs value, country of origin, and applicable Canadian regulation
What Are the Main Risks of Choosing an Unreliable DDP Provider?
For importers, the lowest DDP quotation is not necessarily the lowest total logistics cost. An unreliable provider may create additional costs or operational problems later in the shipment. Common risks include unclear service scope, unexpected charges, and limited shipment visibility.
Unclear DDP Scope
Some quotations may exclude destination charges, customs-related costs, or specific delivery services.
Unexpected Additional Charges
Incomplete quotations may lead to additional charges during transportation or delivery.
Limited Shipment Visibility
Without regular updates, importers may have difficulty planning inventory and downstream operations.
